App Features and Games: NEW AD-FREE PUZZLES DAILY There are never any ads to disrupt the fun in The New York Times Games app, so you can play without distraction. WORDLE Play the original Wordle — created by Josh Wardle — in our app. Guess the 5-letter word in 6 tries or less. SPELLING BEE Is scrambling your strong suit? Play the daily Spelling Bee and see how many words you can make with 7 letters. THE CROSSWORD Subscribers can play the same daily puzzle that’s printed in The New York Times, in our app. Crosswords increase in difficulty throughout the week. CONNECTIONS Our newest word game lets you group words with a common thread. See if you can do it with 4 mistakes or fewer. SUDOKU Looking for a numbers game, minus the math? Play Sudoku and fill each 3x3 set of boxes with numbers 1 to 9. Play a new puzzle every day in easy, medium or hard mode. THE MINI CROSSWORD The Mini is all the fun of The Crossword, but you can solve it in seconds. These word puzzles don’t increase in difficulty throughout the week and feature simpler clues. TILES Unwind while you match elements in the day’s pattern — the key is to make consecutive matches. LETTER BOXED Create words using letters around the square. Letter Boxed is another fun way to test your word-making skills. STATS Track your progress for The Crossword, Wordle and Spelling Bee. For The Crossword, monitor your average solve times, see how many puzzles you can solve in a row, and more. Plus follow your streak on Wordle, and track how often you reach each level in Spelling Bee. LEADERBOARDS Start a friendly competition with The Mini leaderboards. Add up to 25 friends to see who can solve today’s Mini puzzle the fastest. PUZZLE ARCHIVE Subscribers can now solve past Spelling Bee puzzles, plus play over 10,000 crosswords in our archive. The best UI of all the crossword puzzle apps, and fantastic puzzles of course. Unfortunately performance is awful. There are way too many intermittent pauses, especially when a word was completed and the app switches to the next word. It’s absolutely abysmal (!) when the phone is in low power mode. And this is on an iPhone 14 Pro. It’s such a comparatively simple app that it just doesn’t make sense for it to be this slow. Also let’s finally see Dark Mode support across the entire app, please.

Sad that now that I am forced to update, but my phone doesn’t support iOS 16 I can no longer use the app. I guess I have to unsubscribe.

Nice Games and you can do a lot for free but there is also so much content behind the paywall
  • Best App!

This app has costed me so far a very reasonable subscriber fee per month and brought me countless hours of joy. The crosswords are edited beautifully thanks to Will Shortz and the special themes are transleted very well into this app. This is my go-to app for any kind of idle time. Just don‘t use it if you want to have some spare time in your life. Absolutely wonderful!

When you add a new device where you usually don’t play your winning streak on your main device is reset to zero even if you’re on a long winning streak on your account. 😕

  • Love the new Login Bingo!

Any time you open the app you can now play Login Bingo! You just prepare a sheet with squares that contain each game the app offers. Now, anytime you open the app, you cross off the game which asks you to please login first, despite the fact that you are logged into other games. And generally are logged into the app. A lovely new game of madness! PS: Sometimes it helps to go to your account settings and log out. Which result in you being logged into some of the games. 🙃
  • Great App with Drawbacks

In general, the app functions really well, and solving even the big crosswords is comfortable on a small phone screen. However, it’s a shame that only some games are available through the app. For games like Letterboxed, you have to go through a browser, and while that works fine, there is no obvious rhyme or reason for the exclusion of some games from the app. I hope this will be added eventually.
  • Why not include the other puzzles?

I really like the NYT Crossword app, but I can't understand, why the other puzzles are not part of the app, only crossword (without the monthly, which is even well hidden in the NYT app) and Spelling Bee. I play Vertex and Wordl on a daily base and have to switch to the NYTimes-App (Vertex) and the Safari (Wordl) all the time. That's annoying. And it would be great if there could be a Spelling Bee résumé so one could look up which words one missed. Long story short: nice app, good games, but lots of room to grow.
  • Great App

It would be even better if you could play/sync the other NYT games as well (Vertex, Letter Boxed, Sudoku, Tiles, and Wordle)
